Preparation work
For people attending the UK Comenius Meeting
Sunday 2nd December to Saturday 8th December
The theme for the meeting is:-“How effective are European Planning Regulations in ensuring
sustainable conservation, urban and transport developments?”
Background – European people cannot build houses, roads,
factories, schools, shops etc wherever and whenever they like.
People have to get permission to be able to build. Some areas of
Europe are very special, such as parks, coastlines, historic city centres
etc. These areas need protecting or conserving so they are not
spoilt. But European people do need to have houses, schools,
hospitals, places to work etc if we are to have an enjoyable life. How
do we get things right?
Questions that these points raise are:-
1. Who gives the permission?
2. What will the people that give permission be thinking about
when they decide yes or no?
3. Are these people making the correct decisions?
4. Is Europe happy that the correct decisions will be made in
future years?
Here are your preparation tasks. Please answer all threee questions
as fully as possible and be prepared to share your answers with all
the people at UK’s meeting. You can work on your own or as a team.
You can respond with notes, presentations, videos, however you
think fit.
1. Imagine you are a young (26 year old) couple living in your local
town or village. You own a piece of land, and you want to build
a modern new house on it for you and your family to live in.
How do you get permission to be allowed to build this house?
2. List three new public buildings that have been built in your
region (say within 10 kilometres of your school / college).
Describe these buildings. What are they used for? What have
they added to the way of life for your local people? Who gave
permission for them to be built? How good are the buildings?
Have any mistakes been made?
3. Identify one or two special areas in your country. Special areas
are usually places that need preserving and looking after. Why
are these areas special? How do the people of your country
make sure that these places will always remain special? How
can people access these areas without spoiling them?
